Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3): Find the Nightsong – The Myconids and the Duergar (2024)

One major quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 is “Find the Nightsong.” It leads you all the way to the Goblin Camp where you need to eliminate High Priestess Gut and then solve the Defiled Temple’s Moon Puzzle. This quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 will eventually lead you to the Underdark and the lair of the Myconids and Duergar.

Baldur’s Gate 3: The Underdark – “Find the Nightsong” quest guide

Solving Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Moon Puzzle opens a path to the Underdark. There are many ways to get the Underdark, including an entrance in the Noxious Fumes section of the Saving Mayrina sidequest, an entrance through the Gut Priestess’ backroom through the backdoor by pulling the lever on the wall, or an entrance in the spider cave under Blighted Village that you can access by using Featherfall and jumping down one of the endless holes.

However you enter the Underdark, be prepared for some tough encounters. This is a creepy area with lots of hallucinogenic spores, so I recommend using F5 to quicksave often. You can also use the Mountain Pass instead of the Underdark to find the Nightsong.

After entering the Underdark, you’ll need to continue north to reach the Myconid Colony. Be careful, because you could encounter a big burrowing monster called Bulette or face two Minotaurs. I cautiously avoided both of these fights by sneaking.

You should eventually reach the Myconid Colony which has dozens of humanoid mushrooms. If you pass the skill check (two Perception options and one Insight), the Myconids will be neutral. Otherwise, you’ll battle all of them. In my playthrough, I chose to be civil with the Myconids to make things easier — I recommend you do the same through a successful Persuasion or Insight check.

Should you choose the Myconids or the Duergar inBaldur’s Gate 3?

For this next part, I was only able to side with the Myconids and not with their rivals, the Duergar. I had accidentally overwritten my Baldur’s Gate 3 save, so I wasn’t able to try the other outcomes. However, you can side with whichever side you prefer — most decisions inBG3 lie in the morally gray area, so choose the choice that aligns with your playthrough.

Anyway, if you side with the Myconids, the Myconid Sovereign tells you to kill the hostile Duergar you see. A Myconid companion, Glut, also joins you temporarily.

Note: The Myconids and Duergar sidequest isn’t necessary to complete the Find the Nightsong quests. If you want, you can skip this quest altogether and exit the Underdark to finish Act 1.

As for the Duergar, I found them in the Underdark – Sussur Tree and Underdark – Beach areas (there are also fast travel points here).

After you’ve defeated all of them, Glut will say that he plans on becoming the new Myconid Sovereign. You have the option of killing the NPCs in the Myconid Colony or killing Glut now. You can also decide not to kill Glut, but that’s what I did in my playthrough.

If you kill Glut and return to the Myconid Colony, the Sovereign will tell you to follow a mushroom fella who’ll lead you to a hidden room.

It has the Shadow of Menzoberranzan (a very rare helmet; gives the “Shrouded in Shadow” action which lets you turn invisible once per long rest). You can also collect three Icy pieces to make one of the best weapons in the game.

How to complete the Find the Nightsong quest inBG3

What about the Nightsong? It’s actually not found in the Underdark, but found in Act 2. To continue through the Underdark and end Act 1, use the nearby raft. You can spend the time to defeat Grym and access the Adamantine Forge, or skip all that and leave.

Now that you started Act 2 and are in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, you need to travel through this area and reach the Mausoleum found in the northwest section of the map. To do this, you need to find a Moonlantern.

Note: You can also make it to Moonrise Towers without a Moonlantern. You can also decide to save Isobel and defeat Fist Marcus.

Once you’re at the Mausoleum, you need to solve the first Thorm painting button puzzle and then the Shar Umbral Gem puzzle. Continue deeper into the Mausoleum, meet Balthazar, and agree to work with him or defeat him right then and there, and you’ll eventually find the Nightsong by collecting Umbral Keys to continue forward. I know, this is a really long quest.

I highly recommend having Shadowheart in your party when you encounter Nightsong because this is essential to her personal quest.

Once you find Nightsong, there are multiple options. You can kill her yourself, have Shadowheart kill her, or not kill Nightsong at all. The outcome I recommend is to let Nightsong live because that gives you the best romance options for Shadowheart moving forward, but the choice is yours.
