If any of the titles garnered starred reviews in the four library journals, that is indicated after the plot summary of the title. Amazon does a good job of coming up with these monthly lists and especially its year-end best list.
I’ve only read one of these novels: IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME by Alex Finlay and I enjoyed the read. Very Harlan Cobenesque. I would like to read the Wanda M. Morris, the Walter Mosley and the Henry Wise. My assessment of the list: average. ONE OF OUR KIND is the most highly rated to the books on the list with three starred reviews, but the subject matter doesn’t interest me and I’m not sure it’s a crime novel.

Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once, embracing the Liberty ethos, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world’s troubles. Jasmyn’s only friends in the community are equally perplexed and frustrated by most residents’ outlook. Then Jasmyn discovers a terrible secret about Liberty and its founders. DO WHAT GODMOTHER SAYS, L. S. Stratton (Union Square, $18.99, June). Shanice Pierce knows better than to heed bad omens. Then, while cleaning out her grandmother’s house, Shanice comes across a painting she hasn’t seen in years. HOLY CITY, Henry Wise (Atlantic Monthy, $28.00, June). MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, Riley Sager (Dutton, $27.00, June). The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, Robyn Gigl (Kensington, $28.00, June). One is an impromptu holiday to visit the Paris Exposition. The other is personal. George’s Aunt Julia has requested her nephew’s help in looking into the suspicious death of renowned artist Paul Ducasse. Though Julia is not entirely forthcoming about her reasons, she is clearly a woman mourning a lost love. At the exposition, swarming with tourists, tragedy casts a pall on the festivities. A footbridge collapses. Julia is among the casualties. However, she was not just another fateful victim. Julia was stabbed to death amid the chaos. With an official investigation at a standstill, George and Frances realize that to solve the case they must dig into Julia’s life—as well as Paul’s—and question everything and everyone in Julia’s coterie of artists and secrets.
