1. Winter Home of Muskrats Is Protected by lowa Law Muskrats live in streams and sloughs or, occasionally, small lakes. In September and October they build conical houses of reeds, cattails, aquatic roots and mud in which they store food and live through the winter. The houses have an upper chamber above water and a lower chamber extending down into the water, and customarily have two entrances from the water up into the house. It is illegal to destroy a muskrat house in Iowa.

Muskrats are brown in color, about 12 inches long with an eight -inch scaly tail. Muskrats live mostly on the reeds and plants with which they build their houses but have been known to eat corn and occasionally frogs. The muskrat trapping season this year extends from Nov. 14 to Jan. 31.

It is illegal to trap muskrats in game management areas, but because of a high population, Round Lake in Clay County has been opened to trapping this year. Iowa State Conservation Commission officials expect this year's muskrat crop will produce about $600,000 for trappers. From 1933 to 1963, Iowa trappers have harvested 7.542.043 muskrat pelts at an average price of $1.23 each for a total value of $9,283,248 and 770,278 mink pelts at an average price of $12.84 a pelt for a total value of $9,894,225.49. 1 A.M. 'Deaf, Mute Pretense' Is Charged A 21-year-old Des Moines man was jailed shortly after Friday midnight after, officers said, first tried to pretend that he was deaf and mute. Frederick Evans Van Trees, 2010 Stewart and two other youths were stopped in a car driven by Van Trees at S. W. Ninth street and Park avenue by Patrolman Joseph Dunham. When Dunham told Van Trees that he had clocked him at 45 miles an hour in a 30-mile zone and that the car he was driving had loud and noisy mufflers, Van Trees pointed to his mouth and ears as if he couldn't speak or hear," Dunham reported.

Dunham returned to his squad car to write traffic summonses. Van Trees got out of his car and went to the squad car and the patroman handed Van Trees a note saying "speeding and loud, noisy mufflers." Dunham said Van Trees, in a noraml voice then called the officer a "damn liar." The other two youths in the car, who were not arrested, also indicated to Dunham that they were deaf and mute, the ofticer said. But after he had questioned them a few minutes, Dunham said, "they could both hear and talk as well as I can. Van Trees was charged with speeding 45 miles an hour in a 30-mile zone, having loud and noisy, mufflers, having no inspection seal and resisting an officer. He was released on his own bond, pending arraignment within a week.
