Google Pixel Tablet 2: News and Anticipated Price, Release Date, Features and Other Rumors (2024)

While there's no official confirmation yet, there's chatter about a possible release of a new Pixel Tablet this year. Here's the inside scoop we've gathered, along with some of our own exciting ideas that have us looking forward to the Pixel Tablet 2.

When Will Google Pixel Tablet 2 Be Released?

One indication we'll see a new Google Pixel Tablet is a set of codenames uncovered by 9to5Google. These names, Clementine and Kiyomi, resemble those of the original Pixel Tablet, suggesting the development of a potential successor.

Also, Google gave a sneak peek of its first tablet at Google I/O 2022, so it'd follow that we could get details about the Pixel Tablet 2 during the next Google I/O. It's worth noting, however, that the first-gen Pixel Tablet didn't hit the market until a year after its event, in June 2023. If the past is any indication, we might have to wait until 2025 to see the next Pixel Tablet.

Regardless, we'll remain hopeful and assume that Google intends to refresh this product annually.

Lifewire's Release Date Estimate

The Pixel Tablet 2 might make its debut this June.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 Price Rumors

We think the price will stay the same this year. Here's an estimate of how much the Pixel Tablet 2 might cost, based on what it was priced at last year:

  • Pixel Tablet 2 (128 GB) — $499
  • Pixel Tablet 2 (256 GB) — $599

Like the first Pixel Tablet, the Charging Speaker Dock will likely be included.

Naturally, you can expect to pay more if significant changes are introduced, like increased storage or a bigger screen. We might find out about those details closer to the launch date, so stay tuned.

Pre-Order Information

You'll be able to pre-order the Pixel Tablet 2 after Google's announcement. We'll provide a link here when it becomes available.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 Features

The Pixel Tablet 2 features are a bit hazy since nothing official has been announced. But if all our wishes come true, there's plenty to get excited about.

Here are some cool ideas that could really amp up the next Pixel Tablet:

  • More tablet-optimized apps: A tablet is most useful when its screen is fully utilized. Otherwise, what's the point of having a tablet in the first place? We need more Android apps optimized specifically for tablets. And hey, let's not forget, this would also be a win for first-gen customers.
  • Display output: Google's tablet might be capable of video output through its USB-C port. This means you could easily mirror its display on another screen, such as a TV or monitor. Given that a recent Android 14 Beta build supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode, it's not a stretch to expect similar functionality in this tablet.
  • Desktop mode: This is similar to the above. If you're familiar with Samsung DeX then you know how amazingly useful this could be. While Google's desktop mode does exist, it's not nearly as comprehensive as Samsung's. The Pixel Tablet 2 presents an excellent opportunity for Google to build out this feature.
  • LTE: Some Pixel Tablet users have expressed interest in Google transforming the second-generation model into a fully functional tablet with LTE support. We're not convinced this will happen, at least not soon. However, we hope a future model will allow you to take it on trips without worrying about Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Pixel Tablet 2 will most likely have all the same features as the first one. This means you can expect Chromecast support for playing music and movies on the tablet when it's connected, drag-and-drop support, and control over smart home devices.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 Specs and Hardware

The current Pixel Tablet comes with a 60Hz screen. One fan request is for Google to upgrade the Pixel Tablet 2 to a 90Hz or 120Hz screen. A higher refresh rate is great for gamers and streamers because the screen updates the image more often, translating to lower latency and smoother gameplay. Even scrolling is much nicer when using a higher refresh rate screen.

Google is still relatively new to the tablet game, so one 10.95-inch version is understandable. Still, more options could make the tablet more appealing. It would be excellent to see some new screen sizes this year, like an 8-inch Pixel Tablet Mini or a 12-inch Pixel Tablet Pro, to compete with the iPad.

Speaking of a larger display area, tablets are better suited for various tasks than our phones. Using a stylus adds an extra layer of functionality, whether for sketching, note-taking, or navigation. Although the first Pixel Tablet supports stylus input, it isn't bundled with one. Maybe that will change this year.

The Best Drawing Tablets of 2024

Google's existing tablet features the Tensor G2 chip. Since then, the Pixel 8, which introduced the Tensor G3, has been released. The Pixel Tablet 2 is expected also to come equipped with this third-generation chip, offering improved energy efficiency and faster processing speeds.

Let's talk about the Charging Speaker Dock. As the name suggests, this device serves as a charger for the tablet and a speaker. However, there's a catch: it only works when the Pixel Tablet is attached. Once the tablet is removed, it becomes useless; music won't continue playing, you can't cast any audio to it from your tablet, and Google Assistant requests go unheard. A new version that resembles a Nest Audio would be much more practical.

Take a look at the specs for the first Pixel Tablet; we're not expecting too many other changes to make their way into this version.
