Blue Smoothie Bowl Recipe Ingredients

Bear in mind the ingredients are completely up to you, although the original recipe is perfectly delicious as it is. To make a blue smoothie, we use frozen bananas, peaches and pineapple, and a cup of milk (almond, oat, soy, cow’s – whatever you prefer). The pretty, fluorescent blue colour comes from blue spirulina powder or blue pea powder.

Frozen blackberries, blueberries, cocoa nibs, and sliced banana work as toppings or you can sub other fruits if you wish. I also like to add coconut butter crumbles, which is a puree made of raw coconut. This dense, thick substance is sweet and delicious and melts in the mouth.

What to Serve with Mermaid Blue Smoothie Bowls

This is a perfect breakfast, boasting so much flavour. It’s the texture of ice-cream so you could even have it for dessert. This is a meal in one, so I would just enjoy it with my morning coffee or butterfly pea tea, but you can have whatever you wish on the side. If you’re making these as part of a brunch, some other tasty dishes would be savoury breakfast muffins, baked eggs in cocotte or egg bites.

Store: This is a recipe that should be made just before serving, else the ingredients will separate and it won’t be anywhere near as pretty or as tasty.

Mermaid Smoothie Bowl FAQs

Can you use green spirulina?

Blue and green spirulina do not taste the same. The mild flavour of blue spirulina is disguised by the fruit flavours. Do not use green spirulina because that really does have a strong fishy smell and taste.

What’s the difference between a smoothie and a smoothie bowl?

Both are a thick consistency and usually fruit-based but a smoothie is a drink while a smoothie bowl has toppings such as whole fresh berries, banana slices, nuts, or whatever else, so it needs to be eaten with a spoon.
