Orioles vs White Sox Betting Trends

The Baltimore Orioles are 24-23 against the run line, including just 2-8 over their last 10 games. The Orioles have been slightly more profitable for Over/Under bettors with a mark of 24-19-4. Only three clubs have gone Over the total at a higher rate than the Orioles (55.8%).

The Chicago White Sox, meanwhile, are 23-27 against the run line. Chicago has also been a liability for Over/Under bettors, going 22-27-1.

That is important to remember when making Orioles vs White Sox predictions.

So Far, So Good for O’s

Many prognosticators billed the Orioles to be contenders, and they have been just that heading into Memorial Day weekend. At 29-18, the Orioles sit 3.0 games behind New York atop the American League East.

The Orioles’ run differential is plus-52, suggesting their success is sustainable. That ranks fourth in the AL.

Baltimore had a tough start to its six-game road trip, getting swept in two games by St. Louis. The Orioles are just 4-6 over their last 10 games.

Projected for 91 wins, expectations are high for Baltimore. The Orioles could very well hit that total, though they will need better health from their rotation. Left-hander John Means, who missed all last season recovering from Tommy John, is set to undergo testing after experiencing discomfort in his surgically repaired left elbow.

Fortunately, Baltimore’s lineup has been up to task. The Orioles rank second in MLB in homer’s (69) and 10th in runs scored (226) per MLB stats. Eight Orioles have slugged at least six homers, led by shortstop Gunnar Henderson with 16.

Oddsmakers remain bullish on the Orioles, pricing them +230 to win the AL East and +450 to win the pennant. Additionally, they have the fifth-shortest World Series odds at +950.

ChiSox Bottoming Out

Expectations for Chicago were low. Really, really low.

A few months into the season, the White Sox have been as bad as advertised. Their 15-35 record is worst in the majors. So, too, is their minus-107 run differential. Next closest are the 17-34 Marlins at minus-82.

The White Sox (projected for 63.5 wins) rank at or near the bottom of several statistical categories. They are last in both runs scored (143) and homers (35) and 29th in batting average (.216). Their most productive hitter, Tommy Pham (.316 AVG, 3 HR, 11 RBI), began the season as a free agent.

The White Sox could soon get back All-Star outfielder Luis Robert Jr., who on Wednesday started a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League. Robert Jr. has been out since April 6 with a Grade 2 right hip-flexor strain. Even so, it may not matter. There’s very little the White Sox can do to turn this mess around. A midseason fire sale is imminent.

As such, their AL playoff odds have cratered to +2500.

The White Sox went 1-5 on their recent six-game road trip, during which they were outscored 35-15. They are 9-11 in May.

Series Probables

Game 1

Thursday, 7:40 p.m. ET

Grayson Rodriguez vs Mike Clevinger

Rodriguez returned from the injured list (shoulder) to allow one hit over six innings in his last start, a 4-3 loss to Seattle on May 18. The phenom right-hander has a 3.15 ERA over seven appearances.

The White Sox will counter with Clevinger, who has a 5.56 ERA. He’s made only three starts with Chicago after signing a free-agent deal in April.

Game 2

Friday, 7:40 p.m. ET

Corbin Burnes vs Chris Flexen

Burnes is off to another terrific start, going 4-2 with a 2.56 ERA. Burnes threw a gem in his last start, going six innings with one earned run and 11 strikeouts in a 6-3 win over Seattle on Sunday. He is +400 to win the AL Cy Young, trailing only Detroit’s Tarik Skubal (+175).

He will face Flexen, who has a 5.48 ERA in 10 appearances. Flexen has allowed 13 runs across 19.2 innings this month.

Game 3

Saturday, 2:10 p.m. ET

Dean Kremer vs Erick Fedde

Kremer was tagged for five runs over four innings in his last start on the MLB schedule, a 6-3 loss to St. Louis on Monday. The veteran right-hander has a 4.32 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. Home runs (10 allowed in 50 innings) have been an issue.

Fedde, meanwhile, is 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA. The 31-year-old right-hander signed a 2-year, $15 million contract in December after rejuvenating his career overseas with the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Game 4

Sunday, 2:10 p.m. ET

Kyle Bradish vs Garrett Crochet

Bradish has a 2.28 ERA in four starts since returning May 2 from the injured list because of elbow issues. He’s yet to throw more than 90 pitches.

Crochet, a converted reliever, is 5-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. The 24-year-old southpaw ranks third in baseball with 74 strikeouts.
