Wow! What a weekend this was.I am grateful to say that with the many months of planning, I was finally able to experience the end of this symposium. It was a wild ride from start to finish, but at least I was able to experience it with my colleagues. I want to thank the ASCE representatives that joined us this weekend and helped us through the planning of the symposium.Thank you Dr. Shirley Clark, John Segna, and Pat Sullivan for attending. And thank you Jennifer Upmeyer, A.M.ASCE, Jeffrey T. Huffman, MS, PE, F. ASCE, and Prelewicz Melissa for your help and attendance. This symposium was made manageable because of you guys.I also want to thank all of the schools that participated in our 2024 ASCE Mid-Atlantic West Student Symposium: Penn State: University Park, Penn State: Harrisburg, University of Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh: Johnstown, York College, Geneva College, George Washington University, Catholic University of America, Howard University, and Carnegie Mellon University. It was great to see many familiar faces and meet new people as well. Now I want to thank the team that helped make this symposium the wonderful series of events that it was this weekend. The planning for the symposium started during the summer where our E-Board met online to talk about what the future semesters had in store. Our advisor asked us who wants to take on the role of planning the symposium. I jumped on board thinking it would be a fun endeavor, and so did Omar Abu-Khalifeh. Boy were we wrong. Omar was my right-hand man. We would work together on the sponsorship packets, the mailers, the social reservations, and answering overall questions from schools. Being able to divide and conquer with him is what kept me sane because I knew I had someone I could rely on. In terms of financials, Sidd Achar and Fatima Omarjee-Chavez were locked in. The symposium kept them busy with the constant flow of money and I respect the dedication they put forth to ensure all financial inquiries were taken care of. For our chapter president, Elizabeth Quimby, she was brought into the operation a month before mailer 3 was released and she excelled in any task given to her. Whenever something was needed to be done, she would step up to the plate. I am thankful to have a dependable president like her. I also want to shout out Kyler Resnick and Thomas Gilmore for your assistance with the gift bag making. Their focus was more towards the steel bridge competition, but they always helped out when possible. Now about our faculty advisor. Dr. Doaa Bondok is an incredible and passionate woman who tackled the symposium planning head on. She did most of the heavy lifting like finding judges, reserving the large venues, and helping regulate the flow of the events. Even when faced with unexpected, last-minute challenges, she adapts to them all. Dr. Bondok is an inspiration and an icon.Overall, I am blessed to be a part of ASCE, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

How do you mark 25 years of hard work on university fair access for the leading Charity in this area? Our answer, naturally, was to create a new data set.The Sutton Trust have released an important report today (https://lnkd.in/eiKM3yt7) that looks at what has really happened with Fair Access over the 25 years they have been pressing the issue. Many must-read findings in this for universities, just a few of which I highlight here (https://lnkd.in/eP6CKtyS).The results on fair access come from a special data set we have created for the Trust. It draws upon all the published HEFCE/HESA UK university-level performance indicators. Some of these are now no longer readily available and it was quite a task to track them all down and make them consistent and usable for investigating at long term trends. There were lots of elements to this, including making the university coverage consistent over the period, but critical was adjusting for the different measures used over the period. We developed models for adjusting both the actual and benchmark measures for each institution individually, letting us express the whole series in a reasonable common measure. You can read more about this approach and the results in our report to Sutton Trust (https://lnkd.in/e5wNx9zk)Having built the first set of Performance Indicators in the 1990s it has been fantastic to help dataHE colleagues ( Jason Streets Lucia Costantini in particular) in this work. The Trust really deserve a lot of credit for stepping in to safeguard these critical long-run sequences of data on equality and access at a time when official data providers are retreating from this area.

To most of you Birmingham-Southern College won’t mean anything, but for me, it was home. A place where I was challenged not only physically through college athletics, but academically as well. A place where I forged friendships that have continued far past my four years on The Hilltop.I couldn’t be more grateful for the liberal arts education that constantly pushed me outside of my comfort zones, and for the professors who were there to lead us with such compassion and care each time we walked into their classes.Unfortunately 2024 will be this schools final class. After years of financial struggles, and an unforeseen letdown from the Alabama state treasurer, BSC will be closing its doors. If at all possible, it would mean so much not just to me, but the students and faculty at BSC for any kind of donation. Students and faculty are going through the tough process of transferring schools, and finding new teaching positions, so any amount of donation may help make their transitions smoother, and ensure the remaining students have the best final months that they deserve. While it’s painful to know Birmingham-Southern will no longer have its doors open, I’ve been reflecting on a paragraph from an article written about the closing of BSC by Kyle Whitmire for Al.com. Kyle writes: “Pain isn’t meaningless and it isn’t useless. It’s a reminder and a motivator. That hurt you feel is because this thing you’ve been a part of was important”. And maybe “important” is the word to sum up my time there. The education, the life lessons, the people, the relationships, the memories. They were all important. So just as BSC taught us, no matter where we go in life, and no matter what may come our way we will move Forward, Ever.https://lnkd.in/dMVMusgA

This is from my next book, A S-VEwHE: Social, Family, and Fraternal Support… and Peppi, too! This book specifically discusses literature, various SVOs, access to the VAand the VITAL Initiative, veteran-based fraternal organizations, and even a bit on service dogs. I hope that the literature informs you, and that the stories entertain you. Enjoy!I heard of Student Veterans of America (SVA) from a LinkedIn post back in the summer of 2021. I joined in on their convention on-line in Jan 2022. That’s all it took, I was hooked. I knew I wanted to be involved. I followed SVA on social media and kept up with the updates. I joined while still finishing my dissertation. I had the honor of being a presenter for a break-out session during their NatCon23. It was fantastic! I had found a fantastic group of student-veterans, veterans, educators, and veteran advocates. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I belonged. I did have moments of high anxiety, unfortunately a little during my presentation, but those moments did not last long. Someone said, “you’re good,” and I was. Let me tell you a little about the SVA, then I’ll tell you about the conference. The SVA is the premier organization leading service, research, programs, and advocacy for veterans in higher education. The SVA facilitates student-veteran success by providing resources, network support, and advocacy “to, through, and beyond” higher education (SVA, 2023). In other words, the SVA provides support for student-veterans in higher education, and after graduation, for their academic, and life, success. #StudentVeteran #AcademicJourney #HigherEducation #PTSD #PTSDSupport #VITALInitiative #SVOs #SVA #VAMentalHealth

Back to school! I had to take the obligatory 1st day of class photo last week as I began 17th grade at Carroll University. I am pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education, studying Organizational Development and Learning. My first class? Foundations of Adult Education. During our first lecture, Dr. Elizabeth Brzeski, Ed.D. challenged us to think about our “why” for joining this program. She showed us an impactful video by comedian Michael Jr who talks about knowing and understanding your "why". He says, “Once you know your ‘why’, your ‘what’ becomes more impactful because you're walking towards or in your purpose”. Check out the video link in the comments. So, I asked myself, "Why am I here?" For this class, I’m here for a better understand of how I can educate our students and alumni on a not-so-easy-to-approach topic like philanthropy in a way that will help them understand its importance and inspire them to get involved. We crave for all our alumni to want to help the next generation just like the previous generations supported us and our education. It's so easy to be divisive in today's society, so how can we get folks to rally around their alma matter in support of the next generation of nurses, creators, scientists, business owners, leaders, physical therapists, artists, and more!?For this program as a whole, I'm here to learn a new set of skills that help me develop, organize, and lead programs and initiatives that focus on building up the different ways alumni can get involved philanthropically through time, talent, and treasure. I'd also love to be able to teach a CCS 100 course in the future that focuses on this same topic. So, now I challenge you. In the comments, share a project you’re working on this fall and tell me what your “why” is!
