WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME 537 North: Superior Street Appleton 920-739-1231 www.wichmannfuneralhomes.com Laux, Phyllis Phyllis Ann Laux, the former church secretary of St. Mary's Parish in Appleton, died Oct.

19 at the Hospice at Cherry Meadows in Pea body Manor. She was 80 years old and was a resident of the Ridgeview Highlands senior housing complex in Grand Chute. The cause was kidney failure, the latest in a succession of ailments that had kept her hospitalized or in rehabilitation for much of the late spring and summer. Phyllis Ann Loughrin was born on Nov. 22, 1925, in the Town of Lebanon, Waupaca County, the first child of Joseph and Anna Loughrin.

Rocks from their family farm can be found in the walls of St. Patrick's Church, in that cedarlined countryside. The memories of her days as a girl on a hardscrabble farm, her beloved grandmother Margaret, and her Irish cousins as neighbors and schoolmates, were enduring. And the devotion of her many cousins to Phyllis was a constant in her life. They gave her a rousing rendition of "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" at her 80th birthday party last November.

Phyllis took the commercial course at New London High School and went on to a brief career with the war-bond division of the War Department in Chicago during WWII, and then as a secretary to the maitre d' of the Ambassador East Hotel. Although she loved living and working in Chicago, she returned to Wisconsin to attend to her ailing father, who was then living in Clintonville. Four boys were born between 1948 and 1955. In 1957, the family relocated to Appleton, and became active members of St. Mary's, where Joseph Loughrin's sister, Sister Maria, had been the principal of the elementary school. It was Sister Maria's annual visit to Lebanon that set in motion an annual family reunion. Long before becoming the first parish secretary, Phyllis was a volunteer in the library, a member of the Christian Mothers, and a participant, with Leland, in the Christian Family Movement.

She was also a longtime member of the Laetare Book Club. Phyllis was a caregiver, especially for her mother, Anna, who lived to age 103, and she embodied some of the uncompromising nature of her mother. In clothes as in much else, she could be "hard to fit." as her sons and daughters-in-law could attest, but she had a melting point.
