A crowd: Maldonado adds depth in outfield By The Associated Press The arrival of non-roster player Candy Maldonado in camp sets up what appears to be a very competitive outfield situation for the Milwaukee Brewers. With Maldonado, who accepted a make-good contract offer, the Brewers have eight outfielders in their Chandler, Ariz. camp. They include Robin Yount, Greg Vaughn and Franklin Stubbs, who had appeared set as the three starters. But Maldonado hit 22 homers and had 95 RBI for Cleveland last year, and if the Brewers keep him, he'll expect to get playing time somewhere.

"This gives us the option of bringing a stronger club to Milwaukee," said general manager Harry Dalton. "Right now, the pieces of the puzzle don't fit.

But later on we can make them fit." Maldonado, who was stunned over being unable to get a guaranteed contract offer from any club after leading Cleveland in home runs and RBI last season, has confidence in his ability to make the Brewers' roster. "If I didn't think I'd make the team, I wouldn't have taken the offer," said Maldonado. "Hopefully I can come in and show how I can play." Brewers had their first fullsquad workout Wednesday at Compadre Stadium with all players reporting as scheduled. Milwaukee has 52 players in camp, including 28 pitchers. Meanwhile, second baseman Jim Gantner said anyone who wondered whether he would bring a sour attitude to camp after losing his salary arbitration case with the Brewers doesn't know him very well.

"I'm going to play hard I'm not going change my style," he said. "I guarantee you that. I've got a job to do, and if you aren't ready to play, you only hurt yourself." Frank Viola's left elbow is fine for now. Viola, diagnosed earlier this week as having bone spurs, pitched Wednesday at the New York Mets' spring camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

After practice, the 20-game winner told manager Bud Harrelson that his arm "felt fine." 734-5208 Viola said he believes he can avoid surgery for the time being. Orel Hershiser's is ready to pitch in exhibition games, anyway. That's what the doctor for the 1988 National League Cy Young Award winner said Wednesday after Hershiser threw for the second time in spring training. "He felt no pain in his shoulder and the ball was moving very well," said Dr. Frank Jobe, who operated on Hershiser's shoulder 10 months ago.

"If he's excited, I'm excited." Oakland is wondering when Rickey Henderson would come to town. The American League MVP was late, which isn't unusual for him. "I'm not terribly surprised Rickey's not here because of an undercurrent of unhappiness about his contract," Oakland general manager Sandy Alderson said. At Tempe, Ken Griffey Jr. was the lone no-show as the Seattle Mariners began full workouts.

But he's not unhappy; he's worried. Griffey flew back to Seattle late Tuesday after a series of apparent break-ins at his home. The alarm at Griffey's house went off twice Tuesday and has sounded at least four or five times in the past few days, team spokesman Dave Aust said. The medical news was bad for Cleveland first baseman Keith Hernandez, who probably will need back surgery. Dr.

Louis Keppler reviewed magnetic resonance imaging scans and concluded that Hernandez has a herniated disk in the lower back. "We are entertaining the possibility of Keith requiring an operation," Keppler said. "And rather than later, maybe in a couple of weeks. Keith wants to get a second opinion Monday or Tuesday, then he'll get back to us." Atlanta first baseman Nick Esasky, who missed most of the 1990 season because of vertigo, participated in the Braves' first fullscale workout. Esasky had no complaints of dizziness following the workout that lasted about three hours.

He fielded ground balls and soft liners in the infield, but didn't take throws. Toronto exercised the contract option for Dave Stieb. The lefthander was scheduled to make $1.7 million in 1991, but Toronto said it had renegotiated the deal, agreed to on March 8, 1985. Stieb will receive approximately $9.75 million over three years if the options for 1992 and 1993 are exercised. 014 (Cemetery PERPETUAL CARE CEMETERY LOTS (2) Garden of Prayer, Knollwood Gardens.
