8A FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2024 THE POST-CRESCENT Carl A. Verstegen LITTLE CHUTE Carl A. Verstegen, age 96 of Little Chute passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on May 6, 2024. Carl, whose nickname was Kelly, was born on September 11, 1927 in Little Chute to the late George and Marie (Kees) Verstegen. He was the oldest son of three boys in his family.

Carl spent almost all of his life in Little Chute. He attended St. Catholic Schools, graduating in June, 1945 at the age of 17. He joined the U.S. Navy in September 1945 for three years, attending Boot Camp at the Great Lakes Naval Base, then was sent via the train to the Hospital Med School at Balboa Park Navy Base in San Diego.

After Med School, he spent time at the Naval Hospital in Corvallis, Oregon. After being released, Carl attended Marquette University for one semester, and then attended UW-Madison until he was called back into the Naval Services for the Korean War. Carl served this duty at the Corvallis Hospital in Oregon. He was then transferred to the U.S. Receiving Naval Station in Tacoma, Washington.

During a leave in November of 1951, Carl married the love of his life, Doris Ambrosius. They were married on November 28, 1951 at St. Parish in Wrightstown, WI, and both returned to San Diego where Carl continued his service in the U.S. Navy. After being released in 1952, Carl returned home where he continued his education in Pharmaceutical at the school of Pharmacy at UW-Madison.

He graduated in 1954 and worked at Unmuth Pharmacy in Appleton. Soon after, Carl opened and operated Verstegen Pharmacy in Little Chute until he retired. Carl was a hard working businessman, who worked seven days a week. Carl enjoyed retirement, doing many activities that he do when he was working. He loved to garden, both vegetables and flowers that he shared with many neighbors.

He enjoyed the game of golf, and cheering on both the Packers and Badgers in football and basketball. He belonged to the American Legion Post 258 where he served as the editor of the monthly newsletter for 16 years, the First Vice Commander, the Commander, the County Adjutant, and the Finance Officer. Carl also volunteered at the Wisconsin Legion Badger Boys State Conference for many years, where over 900 Senior boys from all over the state came together to learn about our government and develop skills to become the next generation of leaders. For 16 years, Carl organized Legion members to ring the bell for the Salvation Army (the red kettle) during the Christmas holidays. Every Friday, for more than 15 years, Carl went with a group from St.

Catholic Parish to the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse in New Holstein, to volunteer with packaging of food and clothing to send to needy communities around the world. Carl lived a busy but fulfilling life. His faith was very important to him. He was humble, loved God, and friendly to all who he met. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Nepomucence Catholic Church (411 Vandenbroek Little Chute) with Father Ron Belitz officiating. He was born October 14, 1954, son of the late Roman and Alma (Schreiner) Schommer. Bob, a wannabe farmer, awesome semi driver, and always a jokester with an amazing sense of humor, passed away on May 4, 2024. He was so glad he found Wendy again after 20 years apart and they had a second chance, sharing 23 years together (married 16 years). They had an adventure filled life together in the Northwoods during the early years, enjoying the bears in their backyard, and have missed it for the world. He took such pride in the beautiful backyard he created out of a cornfield, all the things he built to make that yard even more beautiful, and sharing the bounty of his huge vegetable garden.

There anything he build or fix as long as he had his Bob was a simple man that could make a Sunday afternoon drive an adventure and made Wendy laugh everyday. He loved all animals, especially his cats Lucy, Lizzy, and Teddy, and missed Abby and Charlie. Bob will be missed by his wife, Wendy; siblings: Sharon (Joe) Figueroa, Joleen Welch, and Keith (Gail) Schommer; nephews: Jeff (Denise) Schommer, Tim (Tiffany) Schommer, Casey Schommer (Elise), and Joe Figueroa, his favorite niece: Sabrina Figueroa (Nick); in-laws: Dave (Belinda) Brown, Kathy Brown (Steve Waskow), and Shari Techlin, and; and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
