The strike had stalled five Milwauke plants after two earlier contract proposals were rejected by wide margins. "I don't want to lose my 16 years to someone off the street," said Edna Tripplet, who has 16 years of seniority. "It's a matter of The pact includes a wage increase in the second year, a $200 per month pension supplement for early retirees, and a total of $2,250 per worker in guaranteed profit sharing payments.

The firm also agreed to reimburse workers who accrued more than $2,500 in medical bills during the strike, and to pay $16,000 in life insurance death benefits to the families of eight employees whoi died diring the strike. Under the contract, the firm will be able to subcontract work without consulting the union unless more than 50 jobs are eliminated and reduces wages for new employees. Union spokesman Colin Campbell said he was disappointed at the large vote margin. "It rollback of many, many years of progress this union has made," he said, after the tally was announced. But, he added that, after 13 weeks on strike, the union was unwilling to gamble further.

The company had sent letters to its members Thursday saying that a re jection of this pact would be likely to cost them their jobs. Company spokesmen said they were pleased at the pact and maintained that Briggs Stratton needed the economy moves to be competitive with foreign firms. Briggs Stratton is the world's largest manufacturer of four-cycle small engines. Company spokesmen said the re call process would take two weeks, and workers would be notified when to return to work.
